FLAG RETREAT CEREMONY

AT THE LINCOLN TOMB
            7 PM on Tuesday Evenings

From June 1 through August 31st, the 114th Infantry Regiment Illinois Volunteers presents an authentic Civil War Flag retreat ceremony on Tuesday evenings at the Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery on Springfield’s North Side.  With the impressive Tomb structure in the background, the flag is lowered with appropriate pomp and ceremony by the men of the 114th in their dress uniforms.  This flag is then properly folded and presented to a lucky spectator.  The winner is chosen at random from those who have registered that evening for the special opportunity to own a flag that has flown over the Lincoln Tomb.

Some evenings also feature special programs in addition to the flag
retreat. See EVENTS for details of this season’s special programs.  Photo-Springfield State Journal Register

The ceremony starts at 7 pm and normally takes about 45 minutes.  Members of the 114th usually remain at the Tomb after the ceremony so visitors can ask questions or take photographs. The cemetery does close at 8 pm.

Weather concerns?  The ceremony normally goes on rain or shine.  However, dangerous weather conditions may cause cancellation for the safety of all concerned.
